Ex-Marconi, Sestri Ponente

Genova, Italy

The Ex-Marconi project in Sestri Ponente is a major urban regeneration initiative that will host student housing in a historically industrial neighborhood, now transforming into a hub for technological research. Its development aligns with the broader context of the Erzelli Science and Technology Park, which will host leading technology companies and the new headquarters of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Genoa.
With the demolition of 52% of the existing volume, the project frees up nearly 4,000 square meters of public space, including a 2,500-square-meter central plaza. The design of the open space reflects the layered identity of Sestri Ponente, preserving its strong industrial character while embracing the lively commercial atmosphere of the nearby Via Sestri and engaging with the district’s new role as an advanced technological hub. A network of tree canopies creates shaded areas, complemented by large, iconic benches designed for study, outdoor work, and social interaction. A kiosk will serve as a focal point for the local community, providing a flexible space for events and collective activities.
Finally, the Marconi Tower stands as a distinctive urban landmark, reinterpreting the telecommunications towers pioneered by the Bolognese inventor. Its presence makes the plaza visible and recognizable from afar, linking the area’s innovative heritage with a contemporary space that looks towards the future.
